Where are the best Irish BDM records?

I have finally discovered one potential Irish ancestor and am interested in tracking her path back I have tried to find a site dealing with Irish BDM but have not found anything except ancestry.com and at the moment cannot afford their access fees. Her name was Jane Reid and she married David Robert Barr in Australia sometime before 1891. David was Scottish. Can anybody offer suggestions?

Sadly, there aren’t any online indexes of Irish bmds. The nearest equivalent is www.brsgenealogy.com but because Jane Read/Reid/Reade/Reed is a fairly common name, you’d need to know an approx. date of birth (dob) and/or country of origin before that site would be much use to you.

If you know a dob and it’s after 1864, you can contact the General Register Office in Ireland, www.groireland.ie, and order her birth certificate. The staff there are very helpful and will do their best to find a registration even if you don’t know WHERE she was born.

If you don’t know a dob, or if it was before 1864, you really need to pin down the county from which she originated. Ideally, you need to know the townland where her family lived. There’s good advice on narrowing down a place of origin on www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com.

Did her parents or siblings emigrate with her? If so, don’t forget to research them, too. They may have left behind the details of place of origin that you need.

If her parents or siblings did not emigrate with her, you may be able to find them in the Irish census of 1901 and 1911. (Her father’s name should be on her marriage certificate.) Both these censuses are being made available online and free of charge, county by county over the next 12 months. See www.census.nationalarchives.ie for latest info. Only Dublin is online so far but records for three more counties are going online in October.

One more word of advice… don’t be put off by anyone telling you Irish genealogy is impossible or that ‘ALL the records were destroyed in the 1922 fire’. Neither statement is true. I’m sure you will be able to find some more details of your Jane Reid, provided you can find her county of origin.

All the very best for your research.
