british ancestry passport

bristish passport/working in france/passport by ancestry?

Hi I am an Australian citizen of 21 years of age born in 1986. Both of my parents are Australian citizens, however, my grandfather is English (who is deceased) I was wondering if I am entitled to apply for a British passport? And if I were entitled would that allow me to work and live in England?

Also I was wondering if people with a British passport are able to work in any European countries such as France? Basically I want to get this visa to work in France.
Would an ancestry visa allow you to work in France? Would it give you a British passport or is that different.
is citizen ship different to having a British passport?

Thanks for your help guys

Sounds like you qualify for an British Ancestry Visa (3rd link, although your grandfather would need to be British born) but not British citizenship/passport (1st and 2nd links). The British Ancestry visa will allow you to work in the UK for 5 years but it will not give you any privledges in France. To them you will be Australian and treated as one in terms of legal status.

What will most likely happen to you is that you will have an Australian passport, apply for an British Ancestry Visa (which will go inside your Australian passport on the visa pages) and then you will be able to work in the UK. You will need another visa to work in France.

Generally British citizenship can be aquired through the parents but not the grandparents. Your parent in question would be able to gain British citizenship via Descent but would not be able to pass it down to you as they and you were not born in the UK.

Passports allow you to travel the world. They’re ID that you use (like your driver’s licence but on a world level rather than country). Generally you need to be a citizen to qualify for a passport of that country.
