Basic Genealogy Research would likely answer that question for you.
Are you asking about DNA testing? yDNA or mtDNA? yDNA is least expensive and may have the broadest database for comparisons through only male surname line with yDNA if you want to apply that to genealogy research. You would get haplotype and genotype information. mtDNA is a worthless waste of $$ for genealogy research at this time.
Through the company called http://www.familytreedna.com you can be sure of anonymity as simply as using a free email and screen name, and that your mail-in cheek swabs (buccal) test only test for specific “markers” that would be helpful in your research to compare to others of your male (yDNA) line. Read their FAQ for lots more information.
