How can I find his grandparents with no marriage certificate?
I have been doing my Family Tree for nearly 2 years and have gone back very far. However, my maternal grandfather I cant get past. I have his birth certificate with his parents James Alfred Moore and Maud Hodder but I cannot find a marriage certificate for them. So I have no dates for them or their parents names. I have searched ancestry, free bmd, gensereunited, etc. Everywhere. Census is no good as he was born 1927.
What can I do?
Was your grandfather John T Moore, birth registered June quarter 1927 in Chapel en le Frith, Derbyshire, who had a brother James, birth registered December quarter 1930?
Might your great grandmother have been married before and therefore had a different surname when she married your great grandfather? I found a marriage in June quarter 1926 for James A Moore and Gladys M Cox in Basford district, Derbyshire/Notts, vol. 7b page 452. It is a pity the indexes at this time only give middle initials – the M could stand for Maud, and perhaps she used her middle name and dropped the Gladys. It may seem a long shot, but it wouldn’t surprise me.
Is there anyone still living from your grandfather’s generation that you could ask if this is possible?
