Genetic Geneaology Tests?
I am a 22 year old woman who was adopted when I was 2 Years Old. I know very little information about my biological parents, only that my mother was African American and my father was from El Salvador. I would like to find out more information about my genetics, but I am not quite sure where to begin. Because of the adoption, I don’t have any direct relatives that I could possibly get DNA samples from as well to show more relatives.
I have looked online at some DNA ancestry kits that you can order. Many are very expensive and are not clear on exactly WHAT will be tested. Some are just for men and some are for women. Before I spend my money I would like to know which ones are the best for my purposes.
To be quite honest you will get little more information from a DNA test than what you already have. DNA testing is highly effective when used as a method of comparison against other samples or information held in a data base (only data bases are held by police, FBI etc. and are not open to public search). The very best you can hope for from any of the tests available is to learn approximately which part of Africa your mother’s ancestors came from and possibly the racial make up of your father. As to the potential of tracing any relatives the results will be worthless unless you have a suspected relative to have a comparative test with. Your money will be far better invested in trying to trace your birth family through written records; a difficult process but the ONLY way you will ever learn what you want to know. Do not throw your money away on a “blind” DNA test (in spite of all the hype in the advertising material) as it will be a total wast of time and money until documentary methods find someone who may possibly be a relative.
Sorry that this is probably not what you want to hear but it is the truth of the situation.
