Where can I get the DNA test that traces my DNA and ancestry? How much does it cost?
I just checked out ancestry.com and the only option is to explore my maternal lineage. Because I am a woman, I need to provide information from a relative on my father’s side to get that information. The only problem is that I don’t know my father or his relatives. How can I determine my ancestry on my father’s side without a sample from him?
You carry the DNA of all your ancestors. If you don’t have a genetic brother or are unable to use a licked stamp, razor or other forensic item of your male ancestry, you are only missing out on the surname part of DNA genealogy. your maternal ancestry, admixture, and all other parts of DNA genealogy are still open to you.
Cost is determined by how many markers you want, FamilyTreeDNA starts at about $200 and goes up to $1000. With an inexpensive test you can still find out much about you family in the dim and distant past. What often happens is that the results depend on your own researching of the meanings of your own markers, which is very individual.
I was very unsatisfied with my results at first, but after joining some news groups and writing to the scientists, I was overwhelmed by how much those numbers mean and what they had revealed that I didn’t realize.
I was also lucky to also be male and have my Y-DNA tested, but I would still do it again now if I could only test my mt_DNA but I would expect to have to order a few extra 10 to $20 tests. I would think that other companies are competitively priced.
