What’s a good site to research your lineage?

I was planning on researching my family and putting something together and framing it for my father’s birthday. There’s a lot of sites out there like ancestry.com but they all claim to offer free trials but want a credit card so they can screw you over and bill you because of some loophole or they only give you limited access to their databases. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a site out there or if there’s any truly free sites? Btw, I’m Italian if that makes any difference in terms of sites.

http://www.familysearch.org/ is the site operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It claims to be, “The largest collection of free family history,
family tree and genealogy records in the world.” And since it is backed by the largest genealogy library in the world, the claim is probably accurate.

You’ll have to register, but last I checked, they didn’t ask for a credit card.
